The ND filters / neutral density filters from Rollei

By reducing the amount of light that hits your camera's sensor, you can increase the shutter speed andOpen aperture photography during the day implement.

This is suitable, for example, in theArchitectural photographyto peopleto filter out, or to make water surfaces appear velvety-soft. For that you needevenly gray colored filter glasswhich thanks specialNeutral gray tint the color neutrality can guarantee and at the same time reduces the amount of light over the entire surface.

Gray filter, also called neutral density filter NDnt, are available in different strengths and series. They differ in how much they reduce the amount of light and whether they are bought for filter holders or as a screw filter. With the strength one also speaks of the so-calledF-stop reduction or theF-stops. For example, without a filter, you would use the one second exposure timeBrightness limit bump so you might with oneND2 filter expose twice as long. So one two seconds longer exposure with the same aperture and ISO value.

You can make an exact calculation of the exposure time with the ND calculator in the Rolleimoments photo app.

The filters are named after the so-called ND strength, i.e. ND8, ND64, ND1000 etc. The higher this value, the longer the possibleExposure time in daylight. Without neutral gray filters, shutter speeds of several seconds with an open aperture would result in completely white images, as this would lead to overexposure.

ND filters are suitable for:

  • Long exposures in daylight without overexposure
  • Larger apertures without affecting the color of the picture
  • Velvety-soft water surfaces, clouds or filtering out people in architectural photos
